During the mad pre-christmas mall rush, I happened upon a small stall in front of Beauty Bar (Glorietta) selling candles. Alice Blue Candle sells hand poured soy wax candles in a variety of heavenly scents. The candles are in pretty glasses with a blue and silver Alice Blue Sticker. (beauty in simplicity.)

Much to the attendant’s amusement, my brother and I stood at the stall inhaling (like addicts) the various samples on display.

Alice Blue Candle has everything from exotic White Tea and Ginger to spicy Cinnamon sticks to homey Dutch Apple Pie. My favorite scents are Hot Chocolate, Peppermint and Vanilla Sugar. (I obviously like food scents.) The little environmentalist in me was very happy with this find. Each candle is made of soy wax (from soybeans!) and the wicks are made of pure cotton, thus they are completely biodegradable and don’t produce much of the filthy black dust/soot regular candles tend to. Not only are these beautifully scented candles environmentally friendly, they’re also much more efficient than regular candles. They claim that Alice Blue candles burn 50% longer than a regular candle its size.

Candles come in 2 sizes. Big candles (6oz.glass) costs 395PHP / piece while the little candles (shot glass) cost 169PHP / piece. They also have a Box Set (2 big candles packaged in a pretty blue box) which costs 800PHP.Each big candle comes with a box, while each little candle comes with a little satin pouch.

Now according to the very friendly and patient attendant at the stall, the Glorietta Stallwill be there until December 31, 2006. Stocks are renewed daily. Watch out for them at the American Women’s Club of the Philippines Bazaar on the 29th of January 2007 (8:30 am to 3 pm) at the World Trade Center. If you can’t pass by the stall, orders and inquiries can be coursed through email alicebluecandle@yahoo.com or phone0916 3077466.

Now, I know that despite the whole aromatherapy fad, candles have yet to shake the “cheap / last minute / can’t think of what to give you” gift stigma. But candles are not just for powerouts, family altars or gravesides. Good scented candles can take the place of air fresheners or incense. I often use them to make any space I’m in feel like home. I really think Alice Blue Candles would make a wonderful homey gift for your loved ones this Christmas – or at least make your “me” time a little more special. Merry Christmas Everyone!
